Abstract:

This paper attempts at exploring the problems involved in the transfer of meaning from one culture to another as well as possible solutions such as the techniques that can be applied to the successful interpretation of texts in their cultural context. Considering these techniques, it is aimed to see what the most frequently-used strategy in dealing with cultural distance in the process of translating is. In order to cope with the research question, a test comprising 20 culture-bound items was developed and administered to 30 senior undergraduate students of English Translation at Islamic Azad University, Karaj Branch. Participants were asked to translate them from English into Persian without any time limitation. After collecting data, the frequency of each strategy was calculated to see which of the following Strategies was most frequently used in dealing with cultural distance in the process of translating:1- Loan Word (Borrowing) 2- Literal Translation (Literalism) 3- Generic word with a descriptive phrase (Paraphrasing) 4- Cultural Substitute 5- Cultural Equivalence

Abstract:

It is now the 15th century A.H.and the Holy Quran, the only divine book, free from distortion, continues to shed light on the world and provide guidance for people of the world-Muslims in particular-throughout their lives. This boundless divine ocean plays a significant role in promoting moral, cultural, social, and other aspects of the society; provided that God"s Word is utilized properly. In order to benefit from this divine revelation, attempts should be made to grasp and digest the Quranic concepts and teachings. Today, Translation is considered as a way of understanding the Quranic teachings though in the past there were some objections against the Translation of the Quran.Unfortunately, most of the existingTranslations of this holy book do not contribute to our objective, i.e., understandingthe Quran properly for they do not establish communication between the message of the Book and the readership. Thus, the author of the present paper intends to deal with the existing problems and challenges, as well as presenting the Strategies necessary in the Translation of the Quran.

Abstract:

This study was an attempt to identify the interlingual Strategies employed to translate English subtitles into Persian and to determine their frequency, as well. Contrary to many countries, subtitling is a new field in Iran. The study, a corpus-based, comparative, descriptive, non-judgmental analysis of an English-Persian parallel corpus, comprised English audio scripts of five movies of different genres, with Persian subtitles. The study’s theoretical framework was based on Gottlieb’s (1992) classification of subtitling Translation Strategies. The results indicated that all Gottlieb’s proposed Strategies were applicable to the corpus with some degree of variation of distribution among different film genres. The most frequently used strategy was “transfer” at 54.06%; the least frequently used Strategies were “transcription” and “decimation” both at 0.81%. It was concluded that the film genre plays a crucial role in using different Strategies.

Abstract:

This article discusses the problems of poetry Translation concerning multiplicity of meaning, integration of content and form in poetic discourse, rhythm and rhyme, and musicality of poetic language. It assumes that poetry Translation, i.e. a type of literary Translation, is radically different from technical and even rhythmical prose Translation. In technical Translation- the purpose of which is communicating information in the most intelligible and fluent manner - the focus is on conveying the content, whereas in poetry Translation the significance of form is not any less than, if not more than, content. In prose, the connection between form and content is rather loose compared to poetry. But in poetic language the form and content are highly interconnected and the total meaning of a piece of poetry is the result of the interaction of form and content. In translating prose, it is not difficult to separate the content of the original text from its form and cast it into a different prose form in the target language, but separating the content of poetry from its form is very difficult and causes much to be lost in Translation.

Abstract:

Religious texts codify aspects of highly culture-specific characteristics which call for Translation in favor of peace and freedom. Rendering religious texts faces translators with non-indigenous difficulties both in linguistic and culture-specific aspects by and large. To come up with drawbacks in linguistic and problems, Strategies and the theories inter alia. The dispute is not over the detraction of neither SL nor TL, but over the priviso that there are more than one choice at lexical level and above to choose from in translating each, with its ad hoc merits.

Abstract:

Amon6g the various approaches to Translation, "word-for-word" and "sense-for-sense" Translations are often considered as the two extreme sides. In the first method, which is a form-based strategy and the old focus in translating, formal correspondence is of prime importance, while in the second approach, which is a meaning-based procedure and the new focus in translating, it is the contextual consistency that is given priority over verbal concordance. The debate on the preference of content to form or vice versa, depending on the text type, is still constant in studying Translation issues. Some favor literal approach, especially in translating literary and religious texts, whereas others believe in the primacy of content over form and prefer idiomatic procedure, so that the "message" or "sense" may not be distorted by the awkwardness resulting from literalism. The present article is an attempt to survey these notions in Translation studies.

Abstract:

This research was an attempt to discover the most frequent shifts in English Translations of the Our’an using Vinay and Darbelnet’s framework. The corpus of the study consisted of five English Translations of the Our' an {those of Shakir, Ghali, Yusuf Ali, Arberry and Pickthall} prepared to be analyzed manually to discover the shifts. The researchers found that in order for the Translations of the Our' an to be exact and faithful equivalents to the Original, shifts are indispensable. Shifts take different forms: structural, cultural, stylistic and semantic. This study revealed that the most frequently occurring shifts are structural and semantic ones. The frequency of shifts in each sub-corpus as well as their frequencies in the entire corpusare measured and discussed.

Abstract:

This paper deals mainly with word equivalence in Translation of religious texts, its challenges and Strategies. It starts with a few definitions of what Translation is and then recounts the main components of Translation equivalence including word equivalence. Then, the constituents and challenges of word equivalence are elaborated. This research demonstrates the complications that the translator of religious texts faces due to the cultural specifities and differences between the source and target languages. Finally this paper compares and analyzes Strategies suggested by well-known Translation scholars and eventually synthesizes its own new Strategies.

Abstract:

IN PRESENT RESEARCH, THE EFFECT OF TEACHING READING Strategies ON STUDENTS’ Translation PROFICIENCY HAS BEEN INVESTIGATED. TO ATTAIN THIS GOAL, 50 PARTICIPANTS HAVE BEEN HOMOGENIZED AND SELECTED BASED ON A READING COMPREHENSION TEST. THEN THEY WERE ASSIGNED TO CONTROL AND EXPERIMENTAL GROUPS (EACH OF WHICH CONTAINS 25 STUDENTS). THE SECOND PRETEST (A Translation TEST) WAS ADMINISTERED TO BOTH GROUPS. THEN THE EXPERIMENTAL GROUP RECEIVED THE TREATMENT (SIX READING Strategies CONTAINING PARAGRAPH HEADING, UNDERSTANDING REFERENCES, RECOGNIZING MAIN POINT, GUESSING THE MEANING OF UNKNOWN VOCABULARY, PUNCTUATION MARKS, AND SUMMARIZING) AND THE CONTROL GROUP RECEIVED THE PLACEBO. DURING SIX-SESSION EXPERIMENT, FOUR READING Strategies WERE TAUGHT AND EIGHT DIFFERENT TEXTS WERE WORKED ON REGARDING THE Strategies. AT THE END OF THE TREATMENT THE FINAL TEST WAS ADMINISTERED. THE RESULT OF T-TEST SHOWS THAT THE EXPERIMENTAL GROUP PERFORMED SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER THAN THE CONTROL ONE IN THE POST TEST. LIKEWISE, THE RESULTS CONCERNING THE SECOND RESEARCH QUESTION DISPLAYED THAT "RECOGNIZING MAIN POINT" AND "UNDERSTANDING REFERENCES" HAVE BEEN USED MORE THAN OTHER Strategies.
